100s of Protesters Gather in Moscow for Unapproved Demo

Saturday, 31 August 2019 08:38 AM

MOSCOW (AP) — Hundreds of people are holding an unauthorized protest march in central Moscow following recent demonstrations in which thousands were detained and many beaten by police.

Saturday's protest, like previous ones, stems from the exclusion of some opposition and independent candidates from the Moscow city council election Sept. 8. Some who marched down the tree-lined Boulevard Ring held placards demanding freedom for political prisoners: 14 people arrested in earlier protests face charges that could send them to prison for up to eight years.

The protests, including a sanctioned one this month that attracted some 60,000 people, are the largest outburst of dissent in Russia since 2011-12. Although the city council has relatively little power, the candidates' exclusion tapped frustration with Russia's tightly restricted politics.
