Italy Expels 2 Suspected Extremists to Counter Terror Threat

MILAN (AP) — Italy's top security official says the country has expelled two more suspected extremists as part of extraordinary measures to combat terrorism.

Interior Minister Angelino Alfano told foreign reporters in Rome that security officials performed the expulsions Wednesday.

Alfano declined to provide any details on the two suspects, where they were detained, or to what nation they were deported.

Italy on Tuesday expelled a Moroccan imam who had been under surveillance for his radical preaching in the town of Noventa Vicentina near Vicenza in northern Italy. He was the eighth imam to be deported as part of Italian measures designed to prevent attacks.

Alfano told reporters Thursday that the deportation orders seek to draw a distinction between "who prays and who shoots."
