LAVRIO, Greece (AP) — Greece's conservative opposition leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis is maintaining an intense campaign timetable despite a strong lead in opinion polls ahead of a general election on Sunday.
The 51-year-old is running on a pro-business and pro-EU platform, and is challenging left-wing Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras. The election is being held in the wake of a crippling financial crisis with Greeks enduring nearly a decade of high unemployment, public spending cuts and high taxes.
The Associated Press followed Mitsotakis on campaign appearances around Greece where events have been kept unusually low-key, avoiding mass rallies that have been a staple of the country's politics for decades.
The son of a prime minister, Mitsotakis told the AP that he's proud of but burdened by his family legacy.
