2 Former UK Prime Ministers Favor Britain Staying in the EU

LONDON (AP) — Placing their rivalries aside, two former U.K. prime ministers have united to argue that Britain is better off in the European Union.

The decision by former Conservative Prime Minister John Major and former Labour leader Tony Blair to share a platform underscores the concern among the political elite about Britain's June 23 referendum on its membership in the 28-nation bloc.

The two leaders warned that leaving the EU jeopardized the unity of the country and the peace process in Northern Ireland. Major says leaving the EU would be a mistake that could destabilize the constitutional settlement in Northern Ireland.

Blair also says a British exit from the EU would be reckless for Northern Ireland, as investors would be less likely to invest — thus jeopardizing a key element of stability.
