Decades of “tragic and exportable problems” await the world if wealthier nations don’t help poorer ones contain the spread of the novel coronavirus, according to the U.N. Undersecretary-General of Humanitarian Affairs Mark Lowcock.

Lowcock is a British economist and accountant whose title also includes emergency relief coordinator and is head of the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs. He told reporters on a conference call Friday arranged by the World Health Organization that he was making a plea for $10.3 billion to help poorer nations mitigate the effects of the virus.

“Unless we act now, we should be prepared for a series of human tragedies, more brutal and more destructive than any of the direct impacts of the virus itself,” CNBC quoted Lowcock as saying.

Lowcock said the United Nations estimates it will cost $90 billion to shield the poorest 10% of the world’s population from worst consequences of the virus and economic impact. Without it, the virus will encircle the globe to “undo decades of development, and it will create decades worth of tragic and exportable problems.”

He said the $90 billion is “less than 1% of the stimulus package wealthy countries have put in place to protect the global economy.”

The comments come a week and a half after the United States formally submitted its notice it intended to withdraw from the World Health Organization over what it said was incompetence, its handling of the coronavirus spread and downplaying China’s role in it.

The United Nation’s COVID-19 Global Humanitarian Response Plan has generated $1.7 billion from donors since it was launched in March, Lowcock said, which is designed to respond to the humanitarian impacts of the virus in low- and middle-income countries.
