Singapore, Taiwan and Hong Kong, which received praise for controlling initial outbreaks early in the coronavirus crisis with fast and aggressive responses, are now facing new waves of infections as their citizens returning home from abroad bring new risks, The Wall Street Journal reported on Wednesday.

In the last few days each of these locations has recorded their highest number of new cases since early in the crisis.

“The trouble with this virus is that it is very unpredictable,” Asia-Pacific Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infection President Paul Anantharajah told the Journal. “We do not know who will be at the center of a super-spreading event. We are not safe in any place until everyone all over the world is safe.”

More than 30% of Taiwan’s total cases since the first one was reported in early January have been recorded in the last three days, most of them due to travelers returning from vacations in Europe and other coronavirus-hit places.

As imported coronavirus cases in Singpaore rose in the past week, it restricted entry for visitors from many European countries, South Korea and Iran and ordered two-week quarantines for those arriving from Southeast Asia.

In Hong Kong, leader Carrie Lam said arrivals from all foreign countries would be placed under home quarantine for two weeks beginning Thursday, extending a quarantine order that had previously affected those coming from hot spots such as China, Iran, Korea and parts of Europe.
