Chinese state media on Thursday called President Donald Trump’s administration “incompetent” in its coronavirus response.
An editorial that was published in Thursday’s People’s Daily, the official publication of the Chinese Communist Party, called out the US death toll, which surpassed 100,000 people. It also suggested that the Trump administration change its response efforts to the virus pandemic.
The op-ed stated that the U.S. death toll represents “one of the darkest moments in U.S. history” and said the number of deaths is “deeply saddening.”
"While there are many factors at play, a key factor behind the high numbers was the Trump administration's mishandling of the coronavirus crisis," the newspaper stated.
The editorial noted that the president has tried to "spin" the crisis to his political gain by praising his own performance and claiming victory over the virus.
The article alleges that Trump has placed blame on China and the media for the pandemic.
"America, the most powerful country on the planet with the most sophisticated medical technologies, did not have to lose so many lives to coronavirus," People's Daily wrote. "The Trump administration squandered vital time as the coronavirus spread across the country...The grim milestone is a failure of epic proportions on the part of the Trump administration."
The editor of the The Global Times, which is owned by the People’s Daily, tweeted Thursday the U.S. death toll was "the biggest shame of the U.S. in over a century."
Global Times editor Hu Xijin said that as Americans continue to die, "the White House is bragging" about its handling of the crisis.
"Those 100,000 died in vain," he wrote.
