Chinese officials say there is "powerful evidence" that the United States has been involved in the massive protests and violence in Hong Kong, pointing to recent comments from lawmakers including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.

"The U.S. denied on many occasions its involvement in the ongoing violent incidents in Hong Kong," China's Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying said, reports CNBC. "However, the comments from those members of the U.S. Congress have provided the world with new and powerful evidence on the country's involvement."

Hua also accused the politicians of "neglecting and distorting the truth" and said they "whitewashed violent crimes as a struggle for human rights and freedom ... they even incited the Hong Kong residents to engage in confrontation with the (special administrative region) government and the central government. "How anxious are they to instigate and see chaos!"

The protests started in March over a proposed bill allowing Hong Kong to extradite people to mainland China, which many said would harm the city's autonomy.

Hong Kong's leader Carrie Lam said the bill would be put on hold indefinitely, but protests continued as demonstrators wanted it to be withdrawn.

President Donald Trump tweeted Tuesday that he "can't imagine why" anyone would blame him or the United States for Hong Kong's problems.

Pelosi has said, through Twitter, that the protesters are sending a "stirring message to the world." She also called on the White House to suspend sales of equipment to Hong Kong's police force and said Congress stands "united" with Hong Kong.

McConnell also tweeted that people in Hong Kong are "bravely standing up to the Chinese Communist Party as Beijing tries to encroach on their autonomy and freedom." He added that "any violent crackdown would be completely unacceptable."
