A Chinese fighter jet intercepted a United States reconnaissance plane on a routine mission Tuesday in what officials called an "unsafe manner."

According to CNN, the Chinese J-10 fighter jet flew at a high rate of speed toward the Air Force RC-135 plane in international airspace above the East China Sea.

The Chinese jet did not get to within 100 feet of the Air Force plane, but U.S. officials were concerned over the incident because of how aggressive the jet was during the encounter.

CNN reports that it was unclear whether the RC-135 had to take evasive actions to avoid colliding with the jet.

Secretary of State John Kerry and Treasury Secretary Jack Lew are currently in Beijing for the U.S.-China Strategic and Economic Dialogue, an annual meeting between the two nations.

Last month, two Chinese fighter jets flew to within 50 feet of an American reconnaissance plane over the South China Sea.
