Chavez Aims Ire at Queen of England

Thursday, 25 February 2010 09:58 AM EST

Hugo Chavez, the Venezuelan President, delivered a bizarre attack on the Queen this week, when he demanded Britain return the Falkland Islands -- known as Las Malvinas in Spanish-- to Argentina.

The firebrand Venezuelan leader used his weekly television show Alo Presidente (Hello President) to rally Latin America behind his Argentine counterpart, Cristina Kirchner.

"Look, England, how long are you going to be in Las Malvinas? Queen of England, I'm talking to you," Mr. Chavez said.

"The time for empires is over, haven't you noticed? Return the Malvinas to the Argentine people."

Still addressing the Queen, he went on, "We are no longer in 1982. If conflict breaks out, be sure Argentina will not be alone like it was back then."

The Queen is not the only person to feel Mr. Chavez's ire.
