More than 1 million Britons have signed a petition demanding that Prime Minister Theresa May cancel President Donald Trump's upcoming state visit because of the newly-installed commander-in-chief's "well documented misogyny and vulgarity."

The huge number of signatures — 1,328,000 as of mid-Monday morning — sets the stage for Trump's visit to be debated in Parliament — a potential embarrassment for May, who last week stood side by side with Trump during her visit to the United States.

"Donald Trump should be allowed to enter the UK in his capacity as head of the U.S. Government, but he should not be invited to make an official State Visit because it would cause embarrassment to Her Majesty the Queen," the petition reads.

"Donald Trump's well documented misogyny and vulgarity disqualifies him from being received by Her Majesty the Queen or the Prince of Wales. Therefore during the term of his presidency Donald Trump should not be invited to the United Kingdom for an official State Visit."

Any petition with over 100,000 signatures must be considered for a parliamentary debate, according to British legislation.

The petition comes amid world backlash following Trump's signing of an executive order banning people from Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen from traveling to the U.S. for 90 days, and which could affect some British citizens.

On Sunday, British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson was given assurances from the White House that the "vast majority of British citizens" will be exempted from Donald Trump's immigration ban, The Telegraph of London reported.

But the newspaper said that "an urgent notice" issued by the U.S. Embassy in the United Kingdom on Monday appeared to contradict the assurance that dual British citizens "from one of the seven countries traveling to the U.S. from outside those countries are not affected".

It's not the first time Trump, the billionaire real-estate tycoon elected the nation's 45th president, has been the subject of a petition in the United Kingdom.

One was launched to ban Trump from the United Kingdom when he first suggested a Muslim ban during his presidential campaign. That petition received 586,930 signatures and was debated in Parliament in a year ago.

So far, Downing Street has rejected demands calling for a cancellation of the state visit.
