Two of Great Britain’s most celebrated war memorials were found vandalized in London early Monday, reportedly with the word “Islam” scrawled on them, according to the London Daily Telegraph.

Both the Animals in War Memorial and the RAF Bomber Command War Memorial were covered in red paint. There have been no arrests in the case and police are treating the incidents as criminal damage, the Telegraph reports.

The Bomber Command Memorial, unveiled by the Queen last summer, remembers the bravery of the more than 55,000 RAF crew members who died in World War II.

The Animals in War Memorial, unveiled in November 2004, pays tribute to all animals that served and died alongside allied forces during the 20th  century.

The vandalism occurs during a period of mounting tension in the British capital following last week’s killing of soldier Lee Rigby by radical Islamists in London.

Approximately 1,000 members of the European Defence League marched into Parliament Square, while a much smaller group of anti-fascist demonstrators gathered beside them holding an “EDL Racists” banner.

EDL demonstrators marched to Downing Street and chanted “We hate Cameron,” referring to Prime Minister David Cameron, according to the Telegraph.

Several mosques have reportedly been attacked, including the Grimsby Islamic Cultural Centre, which was the target of a Molotov cocktail attack Sunday night. Two people were arrested nearby.

The attack on the Grimsby Centre occurred despite a heightened police presence in the area following a similar attack on Friday.
