CBS Evening News anchor Norah O’Donnell appeared to say on a hot mic that opera singer Placido Domingo “sounds like somebody else here,” after he was accused of sexual misconduct.
During a segment on Domingo, a Spanish opera star who has been accused of sexual harassment, O’Donnell’s colleague reported that the singer claimed he believed the relationships were “consensual.” O’Donnell can then apparently be heard saying, “sounds like somebody else here,” in what appears to be a hot mic moment that was caught by The Wrap and Mediaite, but her comment was removed from the audio of the version uploaded to CBS’ website.
The network has had multiple sexual misconduct scandals in the last few years. Former “CBS This Morning” co-anchor Charlie Rose was dismissed in 2017 after being accused of misconduct. The show’s executive producer, Ryan Kadro, left the network after being accused in a lawsuit of not paying attention to warnings about Rose. More recently, network CEO Les Moonves was forced to resign following allegations from multiple women of sexual harassment or assault.
In his statement, Domingo said: “I believed that all of my interactions and relationships were always welcomed and consensual.”
After leaving the network in 2017, Rose, O’Donnell’s former co-anchor, released a statement saying: “I have behaved insensitively at times, and I accept responsibility for that, though I do not believe that all of these allegations are accurate. I always felt that I was pursuing shared feelings, even though I now realize I was mistaken.”
