Soros-Funded Campaign Unveils Plan for Second Brexit Vote

A campaign funded by Hungarian-US billionaire George Soros on Friday published a "roadmap" for a second vote on Britain's EU membership as confusion reigns over the country's post-Brexit relationship with the bloc.

"Best for Britain" said it was lobbying 70 MPs to "swing the Brexit debate" in parliament and wanted them to legislate in October to hold a referendum in March.

The "People's Vote" would be held before 29 March 2019 -- the day Britain is set to quit the European Union -- after a period of "national conversation," the group said.

"No more top down politics. No more lies. No more excuses," said Eloise Todd, the campaign's chief executive.

"This needs to be a truly grassroots effort, with fair and honest campaigns setting out the pros and cons of both future paths for our country."

Financier and philanthropist Soros has funded Best for Britain to the tune of £400,000 ($536,000 456,000 euros), and wrote in an editorial for The Mail on Sunday that he was a "confirmed Anglophile" who considers Brexit "a tragic mistake".

He had been accused in eurosceptic corners of the press of attempting to sabotage a democratic referendum in June 2016 in which 52 percent voted to leave the European Union.

The Daily Mail last month ran a front-page headline on Best for Britain's plan reading: "Plot to subvert Brexit exposed."

On Friday, a spokeswoman for Prime Minister Theresa May said simply: "There isn't going to be a second referendum."
