British Prime Minister Boris Johnson reportedly told his Italian counterpart in March that he hoped the United Kingdom would achieve “herd immunity,” referring to the theory that populations can develop a natural protection against a virus if at least 60% have caught it.

Italian health minister Pierpaolo Sileri told Channel 4’s current affairs series, “Dispatches,” in an episode that airs Wednesday, that Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte told him that Johnson said “he wants herd immunity” in the UK during a phone call on March 13, when Johnson’s government was still pushing back on calls for a lockdown.

Sileri said that he remembers the conversation “perfectly because it was the same weekend that I discovered I had” COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus.

"I spoke with Conte to tell [him] that I'd tested positive. And he told me that he'd spoken with Boris Johnson and that they'd also talked about the situation in Italy.

"I remember he said, 'He told me that he wants herd immunity'."

Sileri added, "I remember that after hanging up, I said to myself that I hope Boris Johnson goes for a lockdown."

On the same day as that phone call, the UK’s chief scientific adviser Sir Patrick Vallance said that the government’s “aim is to try and reduce the peak,” slow the spread, and “to build up some kind of herd immunity” in the UK population, according to The Guardian.

A spokesperson for Johnson told Business Insider that “the government has been very clear that herd immunity has never been our policy or goal.”
