Former national security adviser John Bolton said on Thursday that British Prime Minister Boris Johnson is “playing” President Donald Trump “like a fiddle.”
In an interview on Britain's Channel 4, Bolton said there was a “sea change” in his relations with Johnson when he replaced Theresa May, calling Trump’s relationship with Johnson “a positive for Britain.”
“The reason … is that Trump can’t distinguish between his personal relationships with a counterpart leader, and the actual state of the national relationships between two countries,” Bolton said.
Yet he said Johnson wasn’t “sucking up” to Trump.
“I’ve known Boris before he was prime minister,” Bolton said. “I think he’s got a good sense of humor, and I had the sense that behind those twinkling eyes he was playing Trump like a fiddle, too.”
Bolton also claimed in the interview that Trump urged him to “Go on television and say I should get the Nobel Peace Prize” and that Trump “seriously thought that he should get it.”
