Nazi Victims Want German Rail Compensation

WARSAW - Eastern European Nazi victims demanded Monday Germany's rail company Deutsche Bahn compensate them for its World War II predecessor's role in transporting them to concentration camps.

"The historical successor of Deutsche Reichsbahn should finally assume its moral and financial obligations," said a statement signed in the Polish capital Warsaw by a dozen associations of Nazi victims from Belarus, Poland, Russia and Ukraine.

"We are survivors of the death transports. Deutsche Reichsbahn was paid for each kilometre of our journey towards deportation, imprisonment and destruction. It profited from mass crimes," said the statement.

The joint appeal follows that by Polish victims in January for "humanitarian assistance" to its members.

According to research by the German non-governmental association Train of Commemoration, Deutsche Reichsbahn earned at least 445 million euros (600 million dollars) by transporting Nazi victims to concentration camps.
