Bacardi, the world’s largest premium rum distillery, announced Thursday afternoon that it’s partnering with Olein Refinery, a Caribbean oil refinery, to meet the growing demand for hand sanitizer as a result of the COVID19 outbreak.

Bacardi began changing its operations Tuesday to begin producing ethanol in a quantity sufficient to manufacture more than 1.7 million units of 10-ounce hand sanitizer.

Olein, the only oil refinery in the Caribbean and Latin America with the capacity to re-refine 100 percent of used motor oil into a high quality base oil, will shift its facility over to producing disinfectant.

More than one-half million such units will be donated to local Puerto Rican communities. Earlier Thursday, Bacardi began distributing sanitizer to U.S. Postal Service employees.

Bacardi said the COVID19 pandemic is just the latest in a long line of challenges it has met throughout its history.

“This is a family-owned business and we know what it means to take care of a community in need,” said Jose Class, VP, Supply Chain & Manufacturing, for Bacardi Latin America and the Caribbean. “In the 158 years of Bacardi, we’ve endured our share of challenging times and have learned that resilience, optimism and community are what will help us come out stronger.”

Bacardi said it will continue producing ethanol as conditions require, to the appreciation of Olein.

“We are extremely grateful to Bacardi for adjusting its production to provide us with raw material so that we may ramp up production of the disinfectants we need to help keep the people of Puerto Rico safe,” Jorge Gonz├ílez, President of Olein Refinery, said in a statement.

Bacardi added that rum lovers need not despair. This move won’t disrupt the production or supply of the world’s most awarded rum.
