Kerry Says World Determined to Stop NKorea's Nuclear Plans

Tuesday, 26 July 2016 04:20 AM

VIENTIANE, Laos (AP) — U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry says the international community is determined to let North Korea know that there will be "consequences" if it continues to pursue nuclear weapons.

Kerry, who is in the Laotian capital to attend an Asia-Pacific security conference that includes North Korea, told reporters Tuesday that North Korea is the only country that is moving in the opposite direction when the rest of the world is moving toward a nuclear-free world. North Korea is also attending the conference scheduled for later Tuesday.

He noted that the U.N. Security Council has imposed many economic sanctions on North Korea.

Yet, North Korea "chooses to flout its international obligations," he said. "Together we are determined ... that there are real consequences for these actions," he said.
