LIGNET: Egyptian Court Likely to Block Morsi

In a stunning turn of events this weekend, Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi dismissed General Tantawi, the head of the Egyptian military, and announced he was nullifying the military’s orders restricting the power of the president. Did he have the authority to do it? Probably not, and even though Tantawi appears to have agreed to leave, the Supreme Court will likely step in and at least partially reverse Morsi. This will keep tensions high as observers watch carefully to see whether Egypt can make it as a democratic state.
