Pope Evokes Victims of Asian Calamities

Sunday, 12 August 2012 08:51 AM EDT

VATICAN CITY — Pope Benedict XVI has remembered the victims of Iran's violent quake as well as those impacted by unusually heavy rains in the Philippines and China.

The Pope in his traditional Sunday Angelus prayer on Sunday expressed solidarity to those suffering in the aftermaths of "these devastating calamities," which left many dead, injured and homeless.

Twin earthquakes Saturday in Iran have killed over 250 people and left some 2,000 injured.

In the Philippines, the worst flooding since 2009 left at least 66 people dead this week while more than 440,000 fled to evacuation centers.

And a typhoon slammed eastern China's coast on Wednesday, washing out roads, knocking out power and disrupting transport in one of the nation's most populous regions.
