LIGNET Analysis — Turkey can no longer be thought of as the neutral country providing a buffer between West and East. Not after the events of the last year in which it took a stand with the Syrian rebels against the Assad regime and worked to strengthen ties with Iran, even while allowing a missile defense system to be located on its soil. As the only Muslim nation that is a member of NATO, Turkey is going to find itself in the middle of any conflict between East and West. And it is making clear that its actions will not be easy to predict and probably impossible to control.
