Huawei, the giant Chinese telecommunications company best known as a leading manufacturer of cell phones, is making inroads into the U.S. market despite the fact that several countries have banned the company from bidding on cellular networks and government contracts due to concerns about electronic “backdoors” in Huawei components. These backdoors bypass authentication requirements and allow the manufacturer remote access to computer networks – access that could allow the Chinese government, which is thought to have close ties to Huawei, to steal information or sabotage communications.
