The revelation Monday that the CIA had confiscated a new, more sophisticated “underwear” bomb similar to one that almost brought down a commercial airliner over Detroit on Dec. 25, 2009, is another indication that although al-Qaida and other radical Islamist terrorist groups have been weakened, they remain a serious threat and are determined to carry out terrorist attacks against U.S. and Western targets.

Hayden: No Way Out for Syria Anytime Soon

Michael Hayden, former director of the CIA and the National Security Agency, says the withdrawal of American troops from Iraq last December has made it harder for the United States to influence the situation in Syria. Having troops just across the border, he says, would give the United States more options in helping to stop the civil war that has raged in Syria for more than a year between the Bashar al-Assad regime and a large and angry opposition that would like to remove him from power.
