Newt: Winter Golf in Greenland Won't be a Big Winner

By    |   Friday, 16 August 2019 09:48 AM

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich Friday laughed about reports that President Donald Trump wants to buy Greenland, and said he doesn't think Denmark would sell off the remote island nation, anyway.

"If you elect a developer as president, guess what he thinks about?" Gingrich told Fox News' "Fox and Friends." "The only surprise to me is if he's going to look around, I think he'd want a place he could put four or five golf courses. I somehow don't think that winter golf in Greenland is going to be a big winner."

Gingrich added that Trump is a "better marketer" than he is, so he doesn't know that he would want to go out and sell the market on the "chance to play on a glacier."

There is a historic precedent in the United States wanting to buy Greenland, dating back to the 1800s and again with late President Harry Truman, said Gingrich, and the nation "played a huge role in the invasion of Normandy because the Allied weather station in Greenland enabled us to know that there would be a break in a storm."

At the same time, Gingrich said he has a hunch the Danes will not sell Greenland.

"But knowing how Trump operates, you (might) end up with the U.S.-Greenland Free Trade Agreement at some point," he said.
