Arab Coalition Must Lead War on ISIS

Bernard Kerik By Wednesday, 11 March 2015 11:08 AM EDT Current | Bio | Archive

For the past 11 years I have tried to explain to people that our greatest threat from Islamic extremist terror is the result of an ideology of hate regardless of the name of the group, be it ISIS, ISIL, al-Qaida, al-Shabaab, Hamas, Hezbollah, etc.

In a recent interview, the president of Egypt, Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, said it best: “They all work under the same umbrella; they all come from the same parent ideology and work under different names.”

He went on to say that Islamic terror is not diminishing, but expanding. However, he was confident that a coalition of Arab and Gulf States like Egypt, Jordan, Bahrain, the Emirates, Kuwait, and others could fight the threats that are not only facing the region, but world peace.

I believe this battle is twofold.

First is to defeat and kill off those who use this sick and demented ideology of hatred as a justification to commit one atrocity after another against Jews and Christians, and even Muslims who disagree with their barbarity.

Then, moderate Muslims across the globe must not only stand up against them, but also educate their young that this behavior and conduct are not the true teachings of Islam.

For years we criticized many of the Arab nations for either supporting this radical movement in some way, or ignoring it in their own countries.

Now, 14 years after 9/11, we have multiple Arab and Gulf States that are willing and ready to fight this fight, and could be led by two leaders that are not only the heads of state, but former supreme military commanders in the region, President el-Sisi of Egypt, and His Majesty King Abdullah II of Jordan.

At the height of Operation Iraqi Freedom, we were spending about $2 billion a week, primarily focused on Iraq and Afghanistan. Today, ISIS and these other extremist groups have expanded to nearly a dozen different countries in the Middle East, and are recruiting and growing daily. The spreading of their hate and ideology and barbarity equals that of Nazism in the early 1900s.

The United States and European nations can fight this battle, but there are no countries better suited to address this problem than those countries that speak the language, understand the ideology, and have intelligence capabilities on the ground that can infiltrate these terror groups.

They are now prepared to do it, but need our help and support. They need resources and equipment.

In the absence of our assistance, some in Iraq, has already turned to Iran for help. Allowing Iran’s influence to expand in Iraq is a bad bad move . . . just ask leaders throughout the Middle East. They will concur.

It’s time to take this fight to radical Islam, and do it through a major Arab coalition with the support of other countries around the world that live in peace and freedom.

History, Hitler, and Nazism has taught us one thing for sure — we’re going to spend the money now, or spend far more in the future, if we do not act.

In 1986, Kerik joined the New York City Police Department where he earned the medal for valor. In 1991 he was transferred to the U.S. Justice Department's New York Drug Enforcement Task Force. In August 2000, Kerik served as police commissioner of New York. He led New York City through the devastating attacks on the World Trade Center on 9/11. After retiring from the NYPD, Kerik accepted a request by the White House to lead Iraq's provisional government's efforts to reconstitute the Iraqi Interior Ministry.
