South Sudan Forms New Coalition Government of National Unity

Friday, 29 April 2016 09:04 AM

JUBA, South Sudan (AP) — South Sudan's leaders have formed a transitional coalition government including politicians from the government and the armed opposition who have been at war for two and a half years.

President Salva Kiir appealed to the international community to give money to the new government, which includes former rebel leader Riek Machar as first vice president.

Machar said the security situation must be stabilized as fighting continues.

Kiir named 16 of the new government's 30 Cabinet ministers while Machar nominated 10 and four others were selected by political groups outside of the factions of Kiir and Machar. The government has a 30-month mandate culminating in fresh elections.

Tens of thousands were killed in South Sudan's civil war since 2013 after a fallout between Kiir and Machar.
