ADF International is a fan of President Donald Trump’s executive order that will help advance religious freedom internationally.

Kelsey Zorzi, director of advocacy and global religious freedom for the nonprofit, praised Trump in an opinion piece published in Newsweek on Thursday.

“This week's order is the most significant accomplishment on the Trump administration's already-impressive resume of international religious freedom,” she wrote.

The executive order gives the U.S. government more latitude to advance religious freedom and penalize countries that perpetrate or allow religious persecution, Zorzi said.

The order allows top officials to consider how countries rank in allowing religious freedoms and use that list when making decisions about foreign relations-related topics like visa restrictions, financial aid and even sanctions.

“Trump, of all leaders, is going to put his money where his mouth is, tying diplomatic and economic decisions to international human rights considerations,” she said.

Zorzi, who also serves as president of the U.N.'s NGO Committee on Freedom of Religion or Belief, said the Trump administration has made it clear that the order will help protect all religious minorities, not just a select few.

She also praised the order for requiring diplomats to undergo more training and incorporate religious freedom concerns in dealings with their host countries.

The latest order is just another example of how the Trump administration has focused on advancing religious freedom, she said. She cited alliances and forums the Trump administration has put in place like the International Religious Freedom Alliance and the administration’s first-ever Ministerial to Advance Religious Freedom, which brought together hundreds of government officials and civil society actors from across the globe, as well as the International Religious Freedom Roundtable initiative to launch 100 forums around the world.

“The administration has drastically expanded the reach of religious freedom advocacy globally,” she wrote.

She concluded, “The world will now watch to see how this new, more comprehensive approach to advancing international human rights takes shape. But only the most pessimistic observer could fail to be hopeful about the possibilities for defending the rights of the oppressed and persecuted.”
