National security adviser Robert O’Brien on Sunday said there’s no policy failure in keeping Russia and China from meddling in America’s elections — it’s that Moscow and Beijing are “adverse” to the United States.

In an interview on NBC News’ “Meet The Press,” O’Brien pushed back on criticism of President Donald Trump for not doing enough to deter foreign election interference.

“We’ve put so many sanctions on Russia, there’s almost nothing left to sanction,” he said, adding: “These are foreign powers that are adverse to the United States.”

“We’re in a period of great power competition and Russia and China are on the other side… we’ve pushed back… we’ve stood up to them,” O’Brien said. “If you believe the [Director of National Intelligence] on Russia, you got to believe them on China and Iran.”

On Aug. 7, the DNI released its report on election interference, announcing “foreign states will continue to use covert and overt influence measures in their attempts to sway U.S. voters’ preferences and perspectives, shift U.S. policies, increase discord in the United States, and undermine the American people’s confidence in our democratic process.”

O’Brien also said he was “hopeful” other countries will sign deals similar to the recent Israel-United Arab Emirates agreement — and insisted the United States wants a two-state peace solution between Israel and Palestine.

"We want to see a great state of Palestine living in peace next to Israel,” he said. “That would be fantastic."
