Swedish Athlete Told Rainbow Nails May Offend Russia

Saturday, 17 August 2013 10:05 AM EDT

MOSCOW  — A Swedish track and field official said high jumper Emma Green Tregaro was told painting her fingernails in rainbow colors to support gay rights was a potential violation of the world championships' code of conduct.

In apparent response, Green Tregaro took the field wearing bright red polish on Saturday for the high jump final.

Her gesture Thursday was a quiet criticism of a Russian law that bans so-called propaganda supporting homosexuality to minors. Russian pole vault star Yelena Isinbayeva said it showed disrespect to Russia.

Anders Albertsson, general secretary of the Swedish track and field federation, said Green Tregaro was told her rainbow fingernails could be a violation of rules that ban political statements.
