Obama Unhappy With Ebola Response From France, Italy

By    |   Thursday, 16 October 2014 08:22 PM

President Barack Obama is reportedly annoyed by the anemic response from U.S. allies to the Ebola crisis in West Africa, with one White House source telling Yahoo news that France and Italy are at the top of "the list of talk most, do least."

According to Yahoo, Obama warned that the lack of full participation in the effort could hurt America's security.

"This is not simply charity," he said, according to the report. "Probably the single most important thing that we can do to prevent a more serious Ebola outbreak in this country is making sure that we get what is a raging epidemic right now in West Africa under control."

Obama was in a videoconference with leaders of Britain, France, Germany and Italy "to make sure that we are coordinating our efforts and that we are putting in a lot more resources than, so far at least, the international community has put into this process," Yahoo news reported.

The "top disappointments are France and Italy — [they] top the list of 'talk most, do least,' " a senior administration official told Yahoo news. According to an unnamed congressional source, France had been "asked to take leadership in Guinea" and "could do more."

A U.S. official also expressed frustration Australia and Canada are not sending more healthcare workers to the region, Yahoo news reported.

The Hill reports Obama has been hinting he's angry about the lackluster international response for weeks, and repeated his calls for nations to do more in his videoconference.
