Police Blow Up Suspicious Package at London's Luton Airport

Monday, 08 Sep 2014 01:58 PM

Police blew up a suspicious package at London Luton Airport after the discovery of the item led to the evacuation of passengers and the cancellation of flights.

Police said the package didn’t present a wider danger after conducting the controlled explosion at the airport 30 miles outside of London, Bedfordshire Police said in a statement. Thousands of passengers have had their journeys disrupted as they waited for the terminal to reopen, the U.K. Press Association said.

“A controlled explosion was conducted at 5.15 p.m. and it was confirmed that the item destroyed, although deemed suspicious, did not present a wider danger,” the police said.

Britain raised the terrorism threat level to “severe,” the second-highest level, on Aug. 29 as a result of new intelligence from Syria and Iraq. The rating means an attack is “highly likely,” but that there’s no intelligence about a specific plot.

Officials at Luton, London’s fourth-largest airport, said they were working to open the terminal and return operations to normal. Luton is the base of EasyJet Plc, Europe’s second- largest low-cost airline.

The terminal was closed for more than three hours and officials closed roads leading up to the airport before policed conducted the controlled explosion. More than 40 flights were effected by the incident, the airport said.
