Ukraine to Ban Array of Russian Food Imports

Monday, 04 January 2016 05:33 AM EST

MOSCOW (AP) — Ukraine says it will introduce a wide-ranging ban on food imports from Russia in a week, a response to Russia's ban on food products from Ukraine.

The decree published on Ukraine's government website on Saturday said the imports will be banned as of Jan. 10. They include meat, fish, vegetables, fruit and dairy products. A similar Russian ban came into effect on Friday.

The tit-for-tat moves come in the wake of Ukraine's decision to implement a free trade pact with the European Union. Russia, which opposed the pact, says its ban on Ukrainian food imports is necessary to protect its internal market.

In the fall of 2015, Russia and Ukraine imposed bans on air travel between the countries by each other's airlines.
