Swiss Regional Prosecutor Confirms Handling Polanski Case

GENEVA (AP) — A Swiss regional prosecutor's office has confirmed it has jurisdiction in the complaint of a German woman alleging Oscar-winning director Roman Polanski raped her in an Alpine resort town when she was a teenager 45 years ago.

The office in Bern says it relayed the issue to local prosecutors in the Bernese Highlands, an administrative area in the region.

The case was transferred from the northern city of St. Gallen, where 61-year-old Renate Langer filed the complaint last month alleging Polanski raped her at his chalet in Gstaad in 1972.

Polanski lawyer Herve Temime declined to comment. Langer spoke publicly in a New York Times interview.

Polanski, 84, has been a fugitive since fleeing to France in 1978 after pleading guilty to having unlawful sex with a minor in California.
