Sweden Won't Return People Linked to Failed Turkey Coup

Wednesday, 03 August 2016 06:43 AM EDT

COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) — Sweden has decided not to send back failed asylum-seekers from Turkey with "reliable connections" to the attempted coup in that country.

The Swedish migration agency says "these are supporters of opposition leader Fethullah Gulen," the U.S.-based Muslim cleric that Turkey blames for the July 15 coup attempt.

Migrationsverket says asylum-seekers with "credible political opposition activities" also are included in "the risk groups." It did not put any figures on how many people are in those groups. Last year Sweden received 253 asylum-seekers from Turkey.

The agency says it needs "further information on the current situation in the country." The decision was taken three days after the coup and made public Wednesday.
