Romanian Doctors Charged over Acquisition of Burns Equipment

Tuesday, 29 November 2016 10:02 AM EST

BUCHAREST, Romania (AP) — Romanian anti-corruption authorities have charged the head of a burns' unit with abusing his position, saying the hospital bought equipment at inflated prices which it didn't use.

Ioan Lascar, head of the Bucharest Emergency Hospital's burns department, played a key role in treating patients after a nightclub fire last year in the Romanian capital that killed 64 people.

Former hospital manager Radu Macovei was also charged Tuesday with abusing his position in the same case. Both declined to comment.

Prosecutors said the hospital bought equipment in 2013 without a proper market study, costing the hospital 6.17 million lei ($1.45 million) more than it should have.

The hospital was criticized after the nightclub fire because some of the injured couldn't be treated as the burns unit wasn't fully functioning.
