Warsaw Official Moves to Ban Anti-Israeli Demonstration

Warsaw Official Moves to Ban Anti-Israeli Demonstration

Wednesday, 31 January 2018 10:38 AM EST

WARSAW, Poland (AP) — A Warsaw governor took steps Wednesday to prevent a far-right protest outside the Israeli Embassy by banning traffic in the area, citing security concerns.

Soon after the announcement, organizers said they were abandoning the protest because they don't want to clash with state authorities.

The National Movement group had called for the protest for late Wednesday amid a spat between Poland and Israel over pending Polish legislation that would outlaw blaming Poland for Holocaust crimes committed by Nazi Germany.

Israel has vehemently protested the law saying its unclear wording would stifle historic research and truth.

Warsaw regional governor Zdzislaw Sipera said that for security reasons he is banning traffic around the embassy until Feb. 5, except for residents, embassy staff and visitors, and city services, to prevent protesters from gathering.

He said the embassy has expressed security concerns before the protest. City workers put up barriers around the embassy and police patrolled the area.
