German Consumers Confident Despite Migrant Crisis, Terrorism

Thursday, 25 February 2016 05:01 AM EST

BERLIN (AP) — A closely-watched survey shows German consumer confidence is on the rise, despite concerns over the recent flood of migrants and ongoing threat of terrorism.

The GfK research group said Thursday its forward-looking consumer climate index rose to 9.5 points in March from 9.4 in February.

It says confidence was primarily bolstered by Germany's strong labor market, and overall sturdy economy.

GfK says the survey indicates "that the intensive discussions to achieve a permanent solution to the refugee issue are still not having any impact on German citizens (and) it is clear that even the continued acute terror threat has done little to sway consumer confidence. "

GfK's monthly survey, conducted on behalf of the European Commission, is based on some 2,000 consumer interviews.
