Estonian Ex-PM Steps Down as Parliament Deputy after Scandal

Friday, 13 October 2017 05:10 AM

COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) — A former Estonia prime minister has said he will step down as deputy speaker of the Baltic country's parliament after a scandal involving sexual harassment by members of an Estonian trade delegation during a visit to Malaysia last month.

The Baltic News Agency says Taavi Roivas has publicly apologized for improper conduct during a Sept. 21 party in Kuala Lumpur. Roivas was heading a trade delegation that went to Singapore and Malaysia.

He has indirectly confirmed reports by Eesti Paevaleht, one of Estonia's largest newspapers, that delegation members, including himself, behaved improperly toward women at the party.

Roivas, a prime minister 2014-2016, told BNS on Thursday that he would remain in the 101-seat parliament, but it wasn't clear when he would step down as deputy speaker.
