Pakistan Says 2 Died in Attack on Polio Workers

Monday, 07 Oct 2013 03:52 AM

PESHAWAR, Pakistan — A Pakistani police official says an attack on a team of polio workers has killed at least two people.

Senior superintendent of police operations for Peshawar district, Najeeb ur-Rehman, says those killed were a police officer and a member of a volunteer peace committee.

They died when a bomb went off near their van on Monday in a suburb of the provincial capital of Peshawar in northwestern Pakistan.

Police earlier reported that six people died but ur-Rehman says that figure was later revised to two.

The dead were supposed to be protecting workers administering anti-polio vaccine to local residents.

Militants who oppose the vaccinations often target workers delivering the vaccine and threaten people who want to get their kids vaccinated.
