By    |   Friday, 07 Jun 2013 03:37 PM

A monsoon is expected to touch down in Mumbai during the next two days, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said Friday.

After touching Mumbai in the next 48 hours, the monsoon is expected to enter Rajasthan state in northern India, IMD Director-General Laxman Singh Rathor told the Indian Express.

After arriving over Kerala state in southwestern India, monsoons will gradually extend to cover the entire country by mid-July.

Monsoon season which reportedly accounts for 70 percent of India's annual rainfall runs from May through September, and is critical to increasing harvests of sugar cane, soybeans, rice, corn, and cotton. Agriculture accounts for approximately one-fifth of India’s economy, Bloomberg News reported.
