A hotel in Secunderabad, India suddenly collapsed Monday morning, killing at least 13 people. At least 37 people were rushed to a local hospital, while searchers combed through the debris in search of survivors.
The collapse at the City Light India Hotel trapped scores of hotel workers and customers in the rubble.
Authorities told
The Times of India that hotel officials preparing for the Muslim holy month of Ramadan had stored massive metal utensils used to prepare Haleem, a dish consisting of goat meat, wheat, and ghee.
That probably caused the building foundation to give way, according to officials with the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC).
Secunderabad is part of the city of Hyderabad in southeastern India — estimated to be the sixth-largest metropolis in the country.
The hotel building is reportedly at least 80 years old, and locals had claimed that it was unsafe for habitation and should have been sealed by local authorities. GHMC officials said the building was not on a list of unsafe structures in Secunderabad.
