Malaysian Ex-PM Najib Arrives in Court for Graft Trial

Wednesday, 03 April 2019 02:38 AM

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) — Former Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak has arrived in court for the start of his corruption trial on charges of multibillion-dollar looting of a state investment fund.

The trial was originally due to start in February but was delayed by procedural matters. There is a chance it may be pushed back again Wednesday as Najib's lawyers applied to review the top court's ruling for the trial to begin despite several pending appeals.

Exactly ten years ago, Najib became Malaysia's sixth prime minister but anger over the 1MDB investment fund scandal led to his spectacular electoral defeat 11 months ago. U.S. investigators say more than $4.5 billion was stolen by associates of Najib and the ill-gotten gains were laundered through layers of bank accounts in the U.S. and other countries.
