Ugandan Ethnic Clashes Over Kings Leave at Least 95 Dead

Monday, 07 Jul 2014 11:51 AM

Clashes between ethnic groups in western Uganda over the appointment of rival kings left at least 95 people dead, the police said.

Assailants from the Rwenzururu kingdom attacked villages in the Bundibugyo, Kasese and Ntoroko districts on July 5, using weapons including bows and arrows, machetes and guns, police spokesman Fred Enanga said in a phone interview today from the capital, Kampala.

The death toll includes 75 people who attacked police and army units as well as five police officers, a soldier and his three children and at least 11 other civilians, deputy spokeswoman Polly Namaye said. Security has been reinforced in the three regions and at least 80 people arrested.

“The situation is calm because of the heavy deployment,” Namaye said. “We got information that more attacks had been planned today but this hasn’t happened.”

The Basongora and Bamba people are opposed to the Rwenzururu kingdom of the majority Bakonzo community and have sought to appoint their own king in opposition to Rwenzururu King Charles Wesley Mumbere. The kingdom, which was recognized by the government in 2008, emerged from a secessionist movement around the time of Uganda’s independence from Britain in 1962.

The attacks were not linked to the rebel Allied Democratic Forces that operate across the border in the Democratic Republic of Congo, he said. The ADF operated in the three districts in the 1990s before it was defeated and the remnants fled to Congo.
