Sudan Authorities Assaulted, Threatened Bloomberg Reporter's Life

A Bloomberg News reporter has fled Sudan in fear of his safety after being threatened, assaulted and arbitrarily detained, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ).

Michael Gunn, a British national, told CPJ that he fled Sudan July 2 “fearing for his life,” the organization said Wednesday.

Gunn, who had been in Sudan covering a wide range of issues since November, said he was grabbed by plainclothes police while covering a June 29 meeting held by the Umma opposition party in Khartoum.

Gunn said he was struck several times and had his bag and pockets searched and his shirt pulled over his head. Then, he was thrown into the back of a truck with several Sudanese citizens. Gunn said his assailants brought him to a building where he saw several men dressed in police uniforms.

The Bloomberg reporter said a man in plainclothes said that if it were up to him, the journalist would be killed but he had to wait for instructions from security personnel.

Gunn said he was blindfolded and interrogated for three hours about what he was doing in Sudan. During the interrogation, he was slapped several times.

He was later put back in a truck and released on a nearby street.

Sudanese authorities have repeatedly harassed journalists in the past. In June, for example, they detained a Sudanese reporter for three days and interrogated him over allegations of “harming the morale” of the nation’s military.

That same month, the government ordered a local printing press to cease publishing and distributing three newspapers.
