Spanish Police Arrest Members Of Nigeria Sex-Trafficking Ring

Police in Spain have arrested 25 people in connection with a sex-trafficking ring that smuggled women into the European country from Nigeria, the BBC reported.

Five women were freed in the police raids. In one instance, police found a gang member performing an abortion on one of the victims.

Authorities said the ring targeted Nigerian women by telling them they could get good jobs in Europe. But in fact, they were brought to Spain to work as prostitutes.

The women would be given fraudulent identification and flown to Brazil or Mexico. From there, they flew to France before being smuggled into Spain.

Spanish police seized more than 100 vans in the raids. They said the gang, formed more than two decades ago in Nigerian universities, used the vehicles to conceal more than $6 million in luxury items like alcohol and televisions, which were used to launder profits from the criminal enterprise.

Nigerian female victims of these rings often face isolation and poverty when they return to Nigeria, the Voice of America reported last year. Many live in terror of being killed by a “spell” — an oath in which they swore to pay the human traffickers who brought them to Europe.
