Former British Colonel Killed in Kenya Home Invasion

By    |   Monday, 09 Sep 2013 09:50 AM

A retired British army colonel was shot to death during a robbery Saturday night at his son's home in Kenya.

Edward Loden, who commanded the unit involved in the 1972 “Bloody Sunday” shootings in Northern Ireland, was on vacation when he was gunned down by armed men who forced their way into the family compound in Langata, a suburb of Nairobi.

Loden died on the way to the hospital, the BBC reported Monday.

The killing comes after the murder of another former British army colonel, David Parkinson, who was killed last month by an armed gang at his home near Nanyuki, a town in west central Kenya, in August.

Parkinson, a former commander of a base in the area, and his wife were attacked by a gang of robbers, armed with machetes and a gun, who smashed their way into the house.

Mrs. Parkinson escaped after hiding in a secure room.

A former colonel in the Parachute Regiment, Loden served on numerous operations around the world and was awarded the Military Cross for service in Aden in 1967.

In 1972, he was in command of a Parachute Regiment unit that fired on marchers in Londonderry, Northern Ireland on Jan. 30, 1972, killing 14.

The Saville Inquiry, a British investigation of the “Bloody Sunday” killings which released its findings in 2010, concluded that Loden did not realize his soldiers might be firing at people who did not pose a threat.

He retired from the Army in 1992, and after a career in business management, retired to pursue his love of sailing in 1999, his family said.
