NOUAKCHOTT, Mauritania — The bodies of nine of the 16 Muslim preachers killed last weekend in neighboring Mali arrived on a special flight in the Mauritanian capital, where their remains were welcomed by the Mauritanian president, as well as by members of the Dawa sect, the non-violent school of Islam of the dead preachers.

The 16 were killed by the Malian military last Sunday in the central Malian town of Diabaly, at an army checkpoint where, according to early reports, they were mistaken for the long-bearded jihadists who have taken over Mali's north.

Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz called the killing of the religious men is "an odious crime that was committed due to the difficult political and security challenges that this brother nation is facing."
