Cattle-Rustler Clashes Leave 93 People Dead in North Kenya

Wednesday, 06 May 2015 09:24 AM

Fighting between pastoralists in Kenya's northern counties of West Pokot and Turkana left at least 93 people dead, a government official said.

"The attack has so far claimed 93 lives with 51 of them from Pokot and 42 from Turkana communities," Rift Valley regional coordinator Osman Warsa said Wednesday by phone. Paramilitary forces have been dispatched to Sirma village, Turkana, where they expect to find more bodies following a final raid that happened Tuesday in a series of counter-attacks between the communities since Sunday, he said.

Bandits from Pokot raided neighboring Turkana county and killed people in a retaliatory attack on cattle rustlers, who on Monday are suspected to have killed five family members in Pokot territory, the Nairobi-based Standard reported.

Cattle rustlers frequently clash over water and pasture in northern Kenya and are suspected to have been involved in an attack last year in Kapedo, 623 kilometers (387 miles) northwest of Nairobi, in which at least 19 police officers were killed. Resources including oil and underground water reserves have been discovered in the region over the past three years.

"We have deployed two helicopters in assisting personnel to access remote Sirma village," Warsa said. Another helicopter is patrolling the Kenya-Uganda border area "to stop raiders from taking stolen livestock to the Karamoja area of Uganda."

Raiders from both sides stole about 2,000 heads of cattle and goats, according to Warsa.
