Republic of Congo's Incumbent Re-elected, Say Officials

BRAZZAVILLE, Republic of Congo (AP) — Republic of Congo officials say provisional results show President Denis Sassou N'Guesso, who has ruled for more than 30 years, has won re-election.

Election commission head Henri Bouka said more than 1 million residents voted Sunday, representing just over 52 percent of eligible voters. Bouka said that results would be published as soon as possible.

Two officials with knowledge of results told The Associated Press that Sassou N'Guesso has won re-election with more than 60 percent of the vote, trailed by Guy Brice Parfait Kolelas with 16 percent. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to speak to the press.

Sunday's vote came five months after a constitutional referendum removed term and age limits that would have barred the 72-year-old leader from running.
